Around Buffels Bay

Buffels Bay is a small seaside village on the Garden Route, right next to the Goukamma Nature Reserve and about half an hour's drive from Knysna. There are two swimming beaches close by. The main beach curves in a half-moon that shelters it from strong currents, which makes it one of the safest beaches between Knysna and Sedgefield and a good one for children.

At low tide you can walk about 8 km along the sand to Brenton-on-Sea. Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are all easy day trips, with the forests, the Big Tree and the mountain-bike trails of the Garden Route National Park in between.

Things to do nearby

  • Goukamma Nature Reserve: hiking trails of two to six hours through coastal forest, and kayaks you can book at the main office to paddle the river and lake.
  • Beach walk to Brenton-on-Sea: about 8 km along the sand at low tide. Check the tide times before you set off.
  • Wild Oats Market, Sedgefield: every Saturday morning until noon, from 7:30 in summer and 8:00 in winter, rain or shine.
  • Knysna Heads: views from the viewpoint at the top of Coney Glen Road and from Fountain Point, and boat trips out through the Heads.
  • The Big Tree at Diepwalle: the King Edward VII Tree, an Outeniqua yellowwood more than 800 years old, in the forest off the R339 gravel road north-east of Knysna.
  • Mountain biking: forest routes at Harkerville, and the Petrus-se-Brand route from Diepwalle to Harkerville, in the Garden Route National Park.
  • Robberg Nature Reserve, Plettenberg Bay: a World Heritage Site 8 km south of Plett, with walks from half an hour to about four hours and a seal colony.
  • Plettenberg Bay: about an hour's drive away, with more beaches, restaurants and things to do.
